Tiger Woods: You Are Never Too Young to Set a Goal

“As a kid, I might have been psycho, I guess, but I used to throw golf balls in the trees and try and somehow make par from them. I thought that was fun.” – Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods is the most dominant player of our time. He has won 13 majors and 61 PGA tournaments. Ranked the number one player for 476 weeks as of December 2007. Woods is one of the highest paid athletes of all time including endorsements.

One of the key factors of his success is the fact that he started young. He started imitating his father’s golf swing when he was only 6 months old. Scored a 48 over nine holes at age 6. Won his first Optimist International Junior Championship at age 8. He continued to win the same at ages 9, 12, 13, 14 and 15. At age 24, he achieved what is known today as the “Tiger Slam,” winning 4 majors in a row.

It is never too early to set a goal. Never downplay your chances because you are young. Think long-term.

Youth may have its disadvantages especially in the realm of experience. But youth definitely has its advantages in planning a life. One advantage is in the number of years available. If you start early you may have 40 to 50 years to utilize. With the proper guidance and advice, you can set a worthy goal and devote your energy towards it.

Make Sure Your Goals Are Your Own

No two persons are exactly alike especially when it comes to destiny. Whether you believe it or not, each person has a unique purpose to fulfill. That’s right. You have a unique purpose to fulfill. You have a destiny unlike any other.

It is unwise to make goals based on what most people have. To give in to peer pressure or to keep up with the Joneses will only lead you in a wild-goose chase. In the end, you will not feel the satisfaction or the fulfillment. You will only feel exhausted physically and psychologically.

Most of the time, the wise thing to do is not to compare yourself with others. Take time out for a season of quietness. Look deep in your soul. Use this time to know what your life goals are.

Remove the clutter from your inner self. Silence the noise. Free yourself from the norms. Remove the envy. Free your mind. Think outside the box. Free your imagination. Believe that you can go beyond your present limitations.

Col. Sanders of KFC: It is Never Too Late to Set a Goal

“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” – C.S. Lewis

Col. Harland Sanders believed that it was faster for a man to rust than to be worn out. He obviously acted on this belief. Retired at age 65, with only $105 from Social Security, he ventured to sell his recipe. He offered it to more than 1000 restaurant owners. His deal was that he earns 5 cents for every piece of chicken sold. One thousand eight restaurant owners rejected his offer. But the Colonel did not give up. Prospect 1009 was the first to agree.

He started franchising his chicken in 1952. By 1964 he had more than 600 franchised outlets in Canada and America. In the same year he sold his interests for $2M to a group including John Y. Brown Jr. who became the governor of Kentucky in 1980.

There are many success lessons we can learn from the life of Col. Sanders. One of them is that it is never too late to set a new goal to work on.

Take Your Goals Seriously

“The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don’t define them, learn about them, or even seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will” – Denis Waitley

Many people can tell you what they want in life but they cannot tell you their plan. The simple reason is that there is no plan. Much wishing was done but not much of careful thinking. While I do believe in miracles where prayers are answered and wishes come true, I still believe in using our God-given mind.

If you are serious about your goals you must first think, think, and think. Are they specific enough to aim at? Are your goals realistic yet challenging? Are they measurable? What is the timetable? How much money do you need? How many personnel? What would be the functions of each? Do you need to consult experts? Do you need a focus coach? What is the worst thing that can happen? What is the best thing that can happen? How much are you willing to give and do in order to reach these goals?

Ask yourself these hard questions and answer them squarely. Do not evade any.   Remember that only people who take their goals seriously will ever achieve them. If you do believe in prayers being answered and wishes coming true then you would believe that you can be the answer to your own prayer and the reality of your wishes.

It is Never Enough Until You Do It!

One of the popular catch phrases today is, “Just Do It!” Of course this is not about action without knowledge.  It is assumed that there is information before the doing.  But much information without action is as good as nothing.

What is the similarity between a person who knows but does not do and a person who is ignorant?  They are both useless!  It is not in how much a person knows; it is in how much a person does in respect to the knowledge.

If you know what must be done for you to succeed, you must be willing to do it.  A strong resolve is always necessary.  How much you want something will always affect the way you reach for it.

But you cannot stop there.  Anything short of action is just wishful thinking.  The willingness to do and the actual doing it are still two different things.   There comes a time where you must pour out everything. Don’t hold anything back.  Give it your all!  Don’t wait!  Seize the day!

Seize the Moment When it is Time

“Take time to deliberate, but when the time for action has arrived, stop thinking and go in.” – Napoleon Bonaparte

Calculate the odds carefully but avoid analysis paralysis. Those who rush in without sufficient knowledge are fools. Unreliable information will always increase the risk of failure. If it were a military operation, weak intelligence might result in the loss of lives. Before taking action, carefully weigh the odds and carefully assess the strategy.

This is done best by collecting more data and deliberating with leaders or team members. Make the plan as failure proof as possible but you know that there is no such thing. There may be no perfect option, just choose the best option. There may also be no perfect time, just wait for the best time and go for it! Do not be trapped with thinking without action.

Oftentimes the worst thing is no decision and no action. If you lead a company, your competitors will overtake you. If you lead an army in war, your enemy will outmaneuver you. If it is a squad in enemy territory, you will be captured. If you lead a church, your church will become irrelevant to society. If you are a father, it will create uneasiness among the other members of the family.

Seize the moment when it is time. Do not delay!

Theodore Roosevelt vs. Apathy

Learn from the comments of others but never let them control you. If you magnify the critic, you make them lord over you. Absorb anything worthwhile but reject everything else. Focus on preparing yourself for success.

You know your passion, you know what you have to fight for, and you know where you want to go. The kind of success you desire is already imprinted in your heart, you believe you can develop the skills needed for it. Do it without hesitation and reservation.

You are better of fighting for something rather than just watching others fail or succeed. It is much easier to analyze rather than make the effort to succeed yourself. You may learn from the ups and downs of people but you must put your learning into action. There is no honor in simply watching. The honor is in the fight!

Winning is great and losing is terrible but the worst thing is never trying at all. The worst person is not the loser but the one who is not fighting for something.

Lao-Tzu on the First Step

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” – Lao Tzu

No matter how far, no matter how long, no matter how high; you will eventually reach it. Don’t focus on the distance focus on making the steps. The important thing is to get started.

Some goals are quick to accomplish. They only need little effort, time and resources in order to accomplish. It may be as simple as organizing a family party over the weekend or meeting people for a specific purpose.

Other goals may take longer to accomplish. They need more effort, time, and resources in order to accomplish. It may be writing a book, organizing an international conference, building a business, or earning $100,000.

The important thing is to get moving. Now!

Henry Ford on Obstacles and Goals

“Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.” – Henry Ford

Don’t be afraid of the hurdles, focus on the goal.

There will always be obstacles along the way. It is something that every achiever has learned to accept. It is no secret that the higher your goal the greater the obstacles.

Think of it as climbing mountains. The higher the peak, the tougher it is to climb. Mt. Everest is the highest peak on Earth so it is considered the toughest of all mountains. However, it is also the crowning glory of all climbers.

There was a conversation I heard between an avid climber and an interested observer. The observer asked, “Why do you do it?” He was obviously wondering about the sacrifices done during the prep and the dangers of the climb.

The answer was a question that seemed to be a common response of climbers, “You have not been to the top have you?”

Focus your eyes on the goal. Imagine the feeling of reaching your peak then the fear of obstacles will diminish and disappear.
