Success without Fulfillment

“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher,
“Vanity of vanities! All is vanity.”
What advantage does man have in all his work
Which he does under the sun?
- Ecclesiastes 1:2-3

Solomon, the richest and the wisest King of his time, exclaimed that life is meaningless. It is chasing after the wind.

Is it possible for a man who has reached his goals many times over still be unfulfilled in life?

Solomon inherited a strong kingdom from his father David. By the wisdom given to him by God, he was able to strengthen the kingdom even more.

He accumulated riches beyond any king in his time. He inter-married with many nations thereby giving him peace throughout his life.

His wives and concubines were numerous. He had to build a separate building for them.

Solomon built the Temple of God, built reservoirs of water, vineyards, large homes and more.

He had everything a man could desire! Yet he was not fulfilled in life. How can this be?

This is not a thing to wonder. Any man who pursues anything under the sun will end up feeling empty even though he reaches his goals. Oh there will be a feeling of happiness but it will be temporary.

Soon the heart will crave to try something else but the more you grab something, the more you go deeper into the pit of despair. We must understand that many times what we gain will make us lose something.

A high position in an organization may take away our time with our family. Too much riches may make a person overly protective and thereby lose peace of mind. He might be the victim of kidnap or robbery. Fame may take away privacy. In the end if all we have are stuff under the sun, it is meaningless.

Please do not misunderstand. I am not against progress. But if we are not careful, we might fall into greed. And greed does not satisfy.

The only fulfillment we can have is to look over the sun. Build a relationship with the Creator. Solomon acknowledged that life is really about God.
